LOOKING AFTER YOURSELF - In the ‘Crossfit’ way.... Hand Health, Mobility and Accessories

If you’re new to the Crossfit gym, or you’re a seasoned fitness-er, there are certain things you will start to notice...

The nature and movement types of Crossfit can sometimes be a little rough on your body.

If you’re not used to hanging off a bar, you might notice the skin on your hands gets a bit tender, or the whip marks on your legs while you’re learning to do double unders. You will adapt and get used to them, but there are some accessories and ways that you can keep yourself in ship shape to take on the workout the next day!

HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOURSELF - CROSSFIT WAY

HAND CARE - Hand rips from learning and doing kipping movements CAN be avoided. Grips are your best protection from the friction of the bar, as well as callus shavers and hand repair creams. If you feel the skin on your hands start to shift (like it’s about to rip), change up the movement or ask your coach - there’s no extra marks for pushing on in a workout with ripped hands!

SHINS & ROPE CARE - Shin grazes from barbells and rope climb burns do happen from time to time. There are products available to act as a guard, however they can be expensive. A long pair of socks or a knee sleeve will normally do the trick!

KNEE SUPPORT - Knee sleeves can be helpful in keeping knees warm and compressed in squatting movements. They are also great for rope climb protection and impact protection on hard surfaces for walking lunges.

WRIST SUPPORT - Barbell pressing movements can often put a stress and compression on the wrist joint, especially in high volumes. Wrist wraps can provide support for the wrist bones when in their flexed state, and can also act as a bit of a sweat band at the same time!

SKIPPING - A good quality rope can be expensive, so start with something basic that is light weight and spins freely. Unfortunately there is no protection from the whipping....but practice makes perfect!
