Ask a Coach: Do I have to be fit to do Crossfit?
Let's Ask Coach Kelly

This is easily one of the most common questions I hear from people thinking about trying CrossFit: “Do I need to get fit before I start?”
The honest answer? Absolutely not. In fact, that’s the whole point of starting.
Many people believe they need to lose weight, get stronger, or improve their fitness before they walk through the doors of a CrossFit gym. They worry they won’t keep up, won’t know what they’re doing, or will feel out of place. But CrossFit isn’t designed for people who are already fit — it’s designed to help you become fit.
Every workout is completely scalable. That means the movements, weights, intensity, and volume can all be adjusted to suit where you’re at right now. Whether you haven’t exercised in years, are coming back from injury, or just feel nervous starting something new, there is always an option that works for you.
My own Story:
After an ACL injury from playing touch football, I was introduced to CrossFit505 through a friend. I’d always been involved in sports and group fitness, so I was keen to give it a go — even if I was the person who quietly hid at the back of the room at first.
What I quickly found was more than just a workout. The people were welcoming, supportive, and encouraging, and before long I caught the bug. I found myself looking forward to those early 5:30am classes, not just for the training, but for the community and the chance to push myself a little more each day. I started CrossFit in 2018 at 41 years old, and it didn’t take long before it became a big part of my life.
Fast forward to 2021, I stepped into the role of Gym/Client Relations Manager and became a CrossFit Level 1 Coach. I didn’t get into coaching just to run classes or count reps. I chose this path because I genuinely care about people.
Coaching at CrossFit505 allows me to support members in a meaningful way — meeting them where they’re at, encouraging them to keep going when things get tough, and celebrating the small wins along the way. It’s about creating a space where effort matters, consistency is recognised, and everyone feels like they belong.

You might be lifting lighter weights, modifying movements, or taking more rest breaks in the beginning — and that’s not a bad thing. That’s smart training. As your strength, fitness, and confidence improve, those adjustments change with you. Progress happens step by step.
One of the biggest things that surprises new members is the support. You’re not expected to know everything. Coaches guide you through each session, demonstrate movements, and help you feel comfortable. And the

community around you? They remember what it felt like to be new, and they’re often the biggest cheerleaders in the room.
No one starts CrossFit at their fittest. Everyone has a first day. Everyone has a moment where something feels hard, unfamiliar, or challenging. But those small wins start adding up — your first full workout, your first time lifting a little heavier, your first time realising you didn’t need to stop as much as before.
Fitness isn’t a requirement to begin. It’s the result of showing up consistently.
If you’ve been waiting to feel “ready,” this is your reminder that ready doesn’t mean perfect. It just means being willing to start.
